Guest Review: Bahamas Cruise on Monarch of the Seas

Delightful Cruise on the “Old” Lady of the RCCL Fleet

Booked a 3-night Bahamas cruise with my wife - Angie of Trips with Angie.  We live in Florida and can reasonably drive to four ports.  This time was Port Canaveral.  Ports of call were Nassau and CocoCay.  The ship is about to be sold to another cruise company in April 2013 so this is one of the last cruises.  We were in Outside Cabin 2026 forward starboard.  It has small porthole.  Perfect size for a short cruise but would want larger for a 7-night.  No issues with the room itself but we did have some loud “banging” below and around our cabin on two of the nights.  We never did find out what it was, but since the ship is 21 years old, we wrote it off to old age.  The staff and crew onboard were so friendly.  The cabin steward welcomed us which was a very nice touch.

As a travel agent, I get requests from potential clients,  “I want to go somewhere, but I don’t know where.” My next question is always, “What do you like to do?”

Lots of people end up doing a beach vacation or a cruise because it is what everyone else is doing or what they have always done.  Don’t get me wrong – beaches and cruises are how I spend many of my vacations, but sometimes, you just want to shake it up.

Nowadays, pretty much every activity offers an opportunity to explore a new city while doing something you know you enjoy. Here are a few examples:

Cruise Week - Make your Deposits Now for 2013

The world’s largest cruise sale is set to begin on October 21, 2012 as CLIA’s National Cruise Week kicks off. Cruise Lines International Association has replaced National Cruise Vacation Month and the World’s Largest Cruise Night with a special week where cruise lines offer incredible deals.

The cruise sale will run from from the 21-28 of October and all of the major cruise lines have specials that they will be offering. If you are thinking about putting down a deposit on a 2013 cruise, this week will most likely get you the best deal.

 

Carnival Cruises is offering up to $300 cash back and 50% deduced deposits on select sailings through December 2013. Three to five day cruises will receive up to $200 per stateroom and cruises that are six days or longer will receive up to $300 per stateroom. Table for One: Lowering costs for single travellers

Finding a good companion to travel with can be incredibly difficult. You want to travel, but you haven't found the best companion to join you. Most tours and cruises charge an additional fee called a "single supplement" for travellers who want their own hotel room or cabin. Sometimes these fees are minimal. Other times, single travellers can end up paying double.  Here's some ideas for lowering the costs of travelling solo.

Escorted tours/Group Tours  
These tours offer the safety and companionship of travelling in a group, but the flexibility to go off and explore on your own. Some groups are specifically designed for singles travel. For instance, Globus offers has a single share guarantee - they will find a roommate for you so you don't have to pay a single supplement.

Cruises
Avalon waives the single supplement on some cruises. Norwegian Cruise Lines offers reduced single supplements on some sailings (150% v. 200% of base fare). The NCL Epic revolutionized singles travel by introducing the singles studio concept. The Epic has singles cabins located around a special lounge for just the guests in those cabins.

As a travel agent, I have special access to information on which cruises have a reduced single supplement and which group tours are the best fit for single travellers so be sure to contact me for your next trip.

I recently got a request from a client:

I want to explore a different part of the world, but I am not sure how to do it? Should I book a tour? Do it on my own? What do you think?

Travelling international is a great adventure. Today's traveller has a lot of options and ways to experience the world. Two of the main options are an escorted tour or just booking hotel/transportation.

An escorted tour generally includes airfare, hotels, tours and a dedicated guide to help get you from one location to another and offer insight into the local culture. These tours tend to be a strict timetable and your trip includes 10 - 50 other travellers.

Some things to consider when booking international travel:

Language - A tour guide can help you navigate a new city with an unfamiliar language. You can secure a tour guide as part of an escorted tour or many message boards on travel sites offer recommendations on local freelance tour guides.
